SCC Awards and drinks – 2023

Comrades,  a glorious evening of pizza, awards, pizza, certificates, pizza, pizza, trophy giving, pizza, and some more pizza. All of it delicious, I must say, especially the pizza bit. Once again, The Lyric pub in Soho provided us with an excellent venue for our celebrations and we ate them out of house and home.

Those who received awards for great cricketing prowess and services were:

  • MOST RUNS: Charlie Richards, Vlad the inhaler
  • WICKET KEEPING MERIT: Kamran Malik
  • INFLUENTIAL CAPTAINCY: Dan March, Soldya
  • MOST IMPROVED: Martin Collier, Шахтер
  • MOSY BOWLED WICKETS: Philip Richardson, Yuri

We also had the privilege of awarding the God-father of the SCC, Jontin, with a special award for acting our Captaincy Commissar for ten years, the trophy of the Walrus – a lifetime award that is forever his own. Let’s be honest, a merit that no other could possibly receive! Well done, Jonathan Savitt, bless you Jonty, Huzzah Jontin!

But what of the greatest award that we, the comrades of the SCC can bestow? What of the great samovar of comradelyness, the joyous and magnificent Combramovich Trophy? It is named after Tim Graham, Cobramovich, our fallen, but never forgotten comrade. He knew that the SCC was more than runs, wickets, ruthless competitiveness and so the trophy is for more than results, it is the comrades’ comrade award.

Mullertov, Rob Muller
Cobramovich Trophy 2023

The 2023 season’s comrades’ comrade award, the Cobramovich Trophy goes to Robe Muller, Mullertov!
Congratulations Mullertov, you are a more than worth recipient and provide so much to the team, run scoring, bowling, but knowledge, a special calm, a level head and a warm smile. Congratulations!

Rob was not able to come on the night, but here he is, receiving the trophy from the Jontin, Jonathan Savitt.

2022 End of Season Awards

SCC at The Lyric

The most important role of the Premier of the SCC is to promptly, without hesitation and with no sign of recalcitrance, convey the up to date information for which every comrade relies. Consequently, it is almost thirteen weeks ago that our end of season drinks and awards were held. Without any diversion, I have penned this summary for you all and I think you will agree, with not a hint of delay.

Basking in the light of a humongous lack editorial censorship, I can write that I fecking love the SCC. The awards at the end of a full and exhausting season are a great chance to be amongst comrades and

friends: talk testicles, dream of a distant land of summer sun, dusty wickets, hat-tricks, maidens, tons and half-centuries (although I have no idea what the latter two feel like – I imagine it’s something like a paroxysm of emotion)

A very large number of us gathered in the upstairs dining room of The Lyric Soho, Thursday 17th November 2022. Outstanding food and fizz was made readily available and much merriment. However, the rickety old chair of responsibility beaconed and I tottered to mount it, this happens a lot these days. Who were the lucky recipients of this night’s awards? The list is here:

2022 Soho Cricket Collective awards

  • Most Runs scored: Malikovich (Malik Suleman)
  • Season’s Wicket Keeping Merit: Kam (Kamran)
  • Most Wickets: Malikovich
  • Captaincy: Yankheroff (John Hirst)
  • Best All-Rounder: Dacha (Dan Woodhouse)
  • Most improved: Robin

The 2022 Comrades’ Comrade award
The Cobramovich Samovar winner:

Malik Suleman – Malikovich
The voting was quite emphatic this year, and based on his outstanding efforts with the bat, his command of the ball, and a determination to turn up smiling – Malikovich was the clear winner! All comrades were delighted with the result and the previous holder, Dan March, was more than happy to pass on the responsibility of ownership – with one less handle.

Malik really did have a terrific season and has been a great source of inspiration and a target for individual achievement for us all. He will shoulder the responsibility of the award with great aplomb! Huzzah!!!!

MATCH REPORT – LEY HILL CC versus SCC – 23rd April 2017

Ley hill cc

Comrades!

A new fixture in the season. One that was, shall we say inherited from the unfortunate scattering of an opposition’s list in the confetti strewn path of history. But what a great fixture to have discovered. The rolling meadows of Bucks and the fortunately shining sun of an April Sunday made this great stage, and our luck further blossomed by the arrival of a very charming oppo.

Yes, I have been drinking. Malbec.

Captain Jontin soon had our ten strong team in an order of some description and after a toss of the coin we were made to bat. Any future historian of the SCC will come to realise that we are not at our best when batting first but why confuse facts with glory and defeat? Our openers, Vlad and Analitch gallumped to the crease with a swagger of a well paid docker at a Glaswegian brothel. They set about the opening bowlers with a cautious trot. Vlad was impeccable. He provided a strong wall of Dorothy through which 35 balls made no impact for 40 minutes and 13 overs. This gave Analitch a chance to unwind and give sucker to his aching run sphincter. Over 72 minutes he notched an astounding 42 runs.

In his support came Harrison with a tip chipping 10. Before being bowled by Batt. But a very pleasant session and with great promise for the season. Then the most wonderful return of Samovar to the SCC. Such a joy to have him back amongst us and a privilege too. Seeing his most famous spinning hook unleashed again filled us with hope. He created a very useful 28 before neing caught Alex off Woodley.

Will and Jon tin had a brief moment together at the crease but a distinct lack of vision helped the latter off abruptly and the formjer for 6. Chip, Soldya and Yuri were removed by an increasingly strong bowling field but Soldya fought on for 3. Yuri was given two bites at the cherry. The first for 0 in his usual potions style but his second charitable bash at 5.

So we had notched up 160 all out across 39 overs. A little help from 51 extras…… 51. Yep……. fifty one.

Tea was nice and I am a push over for a cherry bakewell.

Lown opened and scored 102. There’s no easy way to write that and not feel the rush of sick bile launch itself into your soft pallette so I thought I would just write it straight off. I mean he didn’t rush it, he was there for the 25 overs that they took to get 164 and beat us by 15 overs. He was accompanied by Batt and Woodley for 25 and 10 and finally, James for 8. Batt was delightfully bowled by Samovar and Analitch held a super wicky catch to scoop Woodley.  There were some pricey overs but the worse enemy was dropped catches. Yuri, myself, a terrible culprit. A tidy bowling spell of economic near misses, shat upon by dropping a peach.

The match was lost but a great fixture gained. The pub opposite was also very effective in easing our sorrows. If we had a wrist bowler and another pace bowler….. we may, just may have had them!

Thank you, comrades. One and all.
