Match Report: SCC v VCC Sunday 23rd June 2013

VCC win by 81 runs; 250 for 8
SCC 169 all out

Some time after the match, this report has been put off by me, Yuri, your humble comrade commissar Premier. Partially down to my work intensity and impending twins but also to my head straightening out the events of the match. There is no doubt that the VCC won fair and square. That kind of a margin is by no means an accident and by an examination of the figures the splendid knock of 101 that Atif Iqbal produced was stupendous. But in flashback I think we dropped a dozen catches. Two by me but many of us produced fantastic drops. Odd as we were so tight up until now.

Anyhow, here is a slightly cut price match report from a very tired Premier. Tiredness that cannot be visited upon our captain of the day, comrade commissar Marx. We were into the field first at the most beautiful cricket ground at Culford School cricket pitch in Suffolk. The weather was a mix of sunshine and cloud plus one or two brief spells of spittle. I always love that thatched pavilion.

Trickski swizzleoff and myself chucked a splendid load of overs first. The openers for VCC being Iqbal and Savitt, better known to ourselves as comrade commissar Jontin. At this point I will state only fact. there was disquiet at the delivery of over energetic bouncers at a Sunday match. Their presence disquieted Savitt and an abrupt change in pace in the following over presented a catch to Busteroff off myself. But the whole effect was disquieting across the afternoon to some degree greater or small.

Iqbal was glorious and batted in nicely. Winn replaced Savitt but was LBW from Trickski. There was a call for LBW against Iqbal which was questionably not given, but the question is always asked fairly for one team and unfairly for the other and normally in equal measure.

Oppo Stocko was caught behind off ChipMunkski for 17 then a lull as Iqbal carried on. captain Marx owned Patel for 28 then his son Busteroff saw Yorke caught behind for 10. A retirement for Iqbal at 101. One cannot be more grateful for a sportsmanlike withdrawal from the field!! Top marks though, Iqbal.

Soldya dispatched Cobra caught behind and then bowled Ewing. Good bowling comrade commissar. Then the last wicket was Williams caught Soldya off comrade Yankeroff, aka Hirst. The VCC total now 250 with 101 from one man.

The detail hidden in the brevity is the catching which was shocking. I can say that so boldly as I dropped two. The first was a hopeless back track off one of my own balls, backing up I was aware of impending stumps and my anus. Got fingers but dropped. The second a fast bounce out at middle on. Crap. And sadly I was not alone and many of us rejected the nasty all rather than hold onto it. Ah well.

OUR INNINGS
And so to bat and all we have before us is a miserly 250. Openers were comrade commissar captain Marx and son, Busteroff. We were off and our captains stoical style provided Buster with a familiar foil. There work fended off opening bowlers Flew and Bear and brought in Wynn and Hitu. The former taking Busteroff for 40 caught. Sewelski in and then run out off Hitu. The decision was questioned but accepted with stiffened Candour and before bedtime, all were friends. A bit.

Now the younger Marx, Trickski comes in. This then edged the score along to 117 with Trickski scoring 38 until caught off Hitu. The opening now filled by Robski whose improving scores have been a splendid source of reassurance. An always welcome double figure of 14 from Robski was terminated from a stumping off Cobra. Brandonovski was determined to bed in with Dorothy the dotter specialist and in surprise produced a boundary four. But Cobra twirled a twizzler and he was caught Atif for 4.

Yankeroff and ChipMunkski were in and out all too soon all off Cobra. And Captain Marx was taken off York for 43. Soldya produced a couple of boundary 4s and will be dreaming of those for some time and watched Ilyeva and myself come in and out, my trailing back foot again providing a bouncing obstacle for the ball to hit the stumps. That was our lot, all out.

So comrades, what do we draw from this. Firstly, face the pain and write the match report very soon after so that the memory is clearer and less glib. Secondly, more field practice again. Thirdly, let us retain the desire to have fun first and foremost and stick the Sunday ethic. But apart from that, let us not forget that we did score 169 which is not rubbish and that if we had held some of those catches, we may have had a significantly better result.

Onwards comrades to Somerset. That game looks like it will be a superb SCC outing. We shall be ardently SCC in makeup and consequently perhaps, more fragile. But let us redouble our efforts, brush up our banter and break out the beers and schnapps!

Do Svidaniya comrades! Yuri

Match Report: Penn Street CC v SCC Friday 18th May 2013

Penn match report

Draw – timed game 20 overs after 18:30
Penn Street 180 for 7
SCC 171 for 7

Comrades!

Subjectivity works like a champagne soaked visor, the delicate fumes of which drift down a comrade’s schnoz and paint a draw into a glorious result. Not falsely either, for we look at our history and improvement in skills and are rightly glorious in Saturday’s result.

Penn street CC were as ever welcoming, warm and offering a superb pitch and environs. True, still moist from recent rains but quite resilient to the spikes and although throwing up the odd pitched ball, was eminently worthy of a great game. The weather held up. Thick and sticky warm air with cloud and then spurts of hot sun, enough for a red neck tan and a thirst for coo lager. We were a team of 12 and I decided to institute a new convention; If  a twelth man/woman comes along to offer support, they will receive a bottle of wine from the Premier himself (At present, moi) Consequently, Vladimir Boringski was suurprised and delighted to be our first ever recipient of the 12th man award!

We waddled into fielding first and after the applause died quietly away, the bowling commence by my good self and brother, Yuri and Chimpmunkski. Facing were Smith and Sutherland. My style at the moment is to narrowly avoid wickets but keep the scores low. Managed that, but if I had appealed there was an LBW but i seem to lose site of the ball as it reaches the bat, need to improve. Chipmunkski was hard at his nib nib nibbing. Smith had got 4 fours and some steady defence but some skillful field work between Chipmunkski and Brandonovski ran him out. His opening partnership at 35. Briggs came onto the field, I think with a view to take a mortgage on the crease.

It then took a similar amount of overs, now up to 20, for the next wicket. My initial spell over, Samovar replaced me. Chipmunkski stood down too, his 8 overs going for 34 runs so just over 4 per over which is a good improvement and the winter nets clearly show. Good work.

Samovar was bowling, as ever, like a glass shard down a lubricated drain pipe. Robski had padded out his gloves with cold herring and was barely feeling the pain of the impact. Samovar was warming up. But attention! New comrade, John Hirst (nickname tbc). His style is rather elegant with a cheery wrist flick at the release, good length and line and enough to fox the Sutherland’s bat. A swoosh, a wallop and Cobramovich had the ball in his educated hands and Sutherland was out for 30. But a good knock and patiently taken. Samovar was limbered up. Herriot joined Briggs into bat.

The pace and line was hard to keep up with as I stood Mid-On; A flashing arm, A dab of edge, Marx-B reacting, a cheer – a great slip catch! Great bowl, great catch and Herriott was in and out for none. A very valuable wicket indeed.

By now Penn were on 84 off 23 overs and there was a feel of tension in the air. Our spirited Chirruping in the field helps. So who was next, Exton. His knock proved valuable to Penn and was certainly a bit costly, containing two 6s and three 4s off Hirst and Soldya. But our captain Marx decided to have an over and promptly bowled Exton. This felt like a great wicket to take as he had been getting into his stride. The captain’s logic is unique and he promptly stopped bowling… Cmr cms Marx, do please bowl more!

Egan now in to face Cobramovich. Three foxing lofted wonders hissed out from the palm of a cobra and then kerplunk, bowled clean for 1. The effect on the field we wonderful and Penn was now at 130 for 5 off 31 overs. Could we actually contain the runs. Last year was over 250 so this looked encouraging.

Soldya and Cobramovich were partnering up the bowling the field was set for catching. But who was still patting and knocking his way along? Briggs. Walked on the pitch at 14:42 and was still there at 16:30. Very solid and calm. However, Cobramovich plopped a tempter to his bat and with a staggering lurch and eyes like and eagle, captain Marx reached forward and held fast the ball. Twice in a short time he took a valuable wicket. Top leading by example, I say.

A brilliant way to end a good match in the field followed as Slade was runout by an amazing throw from Samovar off Soldya. I would say that the throw was straight and covered fifty yards low and fast. Splash went the bails and great work Samovar.

So our fielding session ended and was truly illustrious. Great throwing from Samovar, Brandonovski, Sewelski and Hirst. fantastic catches from Marx, Cobramovich and run out from ChipMunkski. Bowling and fielding nifty ness from Soldya and Jontin and if course, amazing, palm bruising stops from Robski…. You may now remove the herring.

A delicious tea later and at 17:22 we were in bat. Brandonovski and Hirst opened. The former was still keen from his BAFTA success but the gods of willow were against him and after four dots, Goodchild offered him an offside shorter delivery that was caught by Hammond for 0. Queue some air wafting and an exit. Jontin in.

I was umpiring and keen to learn on the field as much as I could at Strikers end. However I wasn’t keen to develop my finger pointing but Hirst was stumped by Exton by a good three feet and I had no choice but to lift my digit. Sorry comrade. Samovar to the crease.

Looking at Jontin’s entry, there are twelve dots before his first boundary 4. I was looking at his expression for those dots and I would describe it as simpering internal fury. BUT… The tide began to turn and the dots reduce and the runs increase. Samovar, who said he was not focused, still placed a useful 15 in a quarter of an hour before succumbing bowled to McAndrews.

Captain Marx
Captain Marx

Captain Marx was now out in the field. He had been chatting to the oppo scorer, The Magnificent Cally, who said I had had an LBW but hadn’t appealed. Just what you need to hear! But all forgiven as what followed from Marx and Jontin was a partnership of 90 lasting over two hours. Finally Goodchild bowled Jontin for 77 but his knock placed us in a really good place and a chance to win or a least force a draw. Eleven 4s in total and a great couple of hours of batting.

Cobramovich and Sewelski soon perished to Goodchild too but by now it was ten to eight and Soldya and the lower orders were required to cling on to the chance of a draw, a win possible but unlikely. On the last ball I was in and took a single but we were safely drawn by then. Both teams exhibited exemplary sporting appreciation and all chatted raucously about the great day in the pub.

There were many great acts of sporting prowess and finesse in the match by us all. We can all be proud. I must commend Jontin with all respect for his great knock, a performance which lifted the total to a point where even victory was possible. But comrade of the match for me was our captain Marx who took fantastic catches, a wicket and then batted a fab 43 to support Jontin in his stand. Lead by example!

Comrades, congratulations on a great game, a great day and a good step in the future of the SCC.

Do Svidaniya!!

Match Report: SCC v BAFTA CC/SCC 20/20 Friday 3rd May 2013

BAFTA CC/SCC beat SCC by 64 runs
20/20 match

Comrades!

SCC team v BAFTA 3 may 2013
SCC team v BAFTA 3 may 2013

The season has begun. The sun shone bright and this small corner of Ham, nestling alongside the Thames became our battleground. For a municipal pitch it was actually rather attractive, lined as it was on all sides by trees, horses and the entrance gate to Ham House. Even the outfield threatened little risk of a broken ankle, wicket was also reasonable though dull.

BAFTA CC needed supplementing by SCC members so we brought about fifteen along and were able to get a match on, which was after all the whole point of the season, cricket! Pitch was laid out and the PAWS were soon sat in expectant excitement.

SCC fielded first and due to commencement running late, there was already a feeling of time pressure. Myself and New comrade Tomsk (Tom Mayhew) opened the bowling and tried to keep things calm. Very quickly it became clear that S.Tommy (?) was a good bat and was finding sixes and fours from the first seven overs. Bennettov was donated to BAFTA and opened alongside Tommy (really? Is that his name?) He was only just back from foreign travels and I think the foreign food may have influenced his performance. Good for us though and I hope he forgives me for keeping his score under check with tootsie bowling.

Comrade Chipmonkski Nibbed in ( Brother Tim Richardson). Tomsk moved back into the field having fought valiantly against Tommy and Bennetov over three overs for 22 runs. Chipmonkski had a fight but by now both bats had some eye in. The run rate stepped up and the mood drooped. Chipmonkski was joined in the battle with Soldya (Dan March) but Tommy was clattering briskly by now. Two slow medium pacers were too tempting and the traps set for a catch were never quite tight enough. The odd dropped catch… Ahh.

With Tommy passed 50 Samovar (Sam Kankamage) was called up. Bennettov adopted the impartiality of the BAFTA loan with fine aplomb and scored a lovely 25 before being caught delightfully by Jonty at mid wicket! The atmosphere was lifted. Our very own comrade captain commissar captain Marx popped up, again on loan to BAFTA. Sixteen scored not out.

The last few overs were quite tough to watch from the outfield but were blessed by fighting spirit and two great moments. Tomsk, who had been passing me every over as we travelled in and out, was brilliantly rushing in from the deep and pouched a lovely catch taking the wicket of Tommy for 104. A great score by him and a great catch by Tomsk. There were also two run outs the best being on the very last ball of the innings, seeing Robski clatter the stumps after a furious scrabble. Brilliant!

Brandonovski and Yuri Bromance
Brandonovski and Yuri Bromance

Even by the length of this report so far you can see that time had slipped by and the sun was beautiful, golden… And just about sunk below the west! We should have reduced overs? Who knows but it was so dark! Samovar and Tomsk were in first and both out very soon from sharp bowling by Miller. This bought Robski and myself in. Spotting a dark red ball against the sun at dusk against silhouetted trees is obviously not a great laugh and bouncers and medium fast bowling doesn’t help. But after Robski departed, Brandonovski and myself settled nervously down to a little Dorothy and a little hitting out. Two career bests followed ( career!!! lol) and saw Bennettov put up 20 and myself 12. We shall both be smiling for weeks.

Vladimir Boringski (Charlie Richards) and comrade commissar Treasurer Ilyeva produced scores of 18 and 8 respectively and if I am not wrong, that may have been Ilyeva’s best too. Quiet and solid. Well done both.

So BAFTA CC/SCC win 154 runs over 90 and congrats and good luck with the team and year ahead. Special mention to S.Tommy whose 104 was blinding and well deserved. Thanks To Ross too for being bold enough to start a BAFTA team and we hope to meet again on the field.

For me, comrade of the match?…. I think I shall nod to Brandonovski who projected his batting forward brightly into this new season. All the nets have made an enormous difference on the weaker part of last year’s games, the batting. Let’s keep it up comrades and have a great season. Semper Sodales, fors et victores!
