Stonor CC win by 7 wickets scoring 219
SCC all out for 95
Timed match

Comrades, it is almost unbelievable that our last match of the season has been played. I am so upset, I haven’t yet even opened my kit bag to clean my whites. However, Mrs. Yuri will no doubt soon be bend my ear to do so. Still, as the season has to end, it could not have ended with a more beautiful, exciting and friendly fixture as this. Stonor CC came as manner from a communist heaven (Minsk?) to replace the dissolved fixture with the NFTS. It will be back next year, but so will Stonor, I hope! Thanks to The Fixture List for tipping me the nod,  cocking me a wink or wibbling me wobble.

THEIR KNOCK
Strolling out into the Valley of the living, gazed down on by Red Kites and Dear from the valley’s soft, encompassing hills, one was filled with a desire to play smashing cricket and be jolly hearted and hopeful. Cobramovich captained and won the toss and put the oppo into bat, we were off.

Collings and Powell strolled purposefully out into their field of battle, the SCC gathering themselves to play. The sun was bright and hot and the bowling opened with myself and Antonov. I had bowled two balls to dot, then on my third, Collings made a playful swoosh and edged the ball high and into the grateful and sticky hands of our comrade, Andropov Sewelski. An amazing start. I felt quite bad, being so familiar to the batsman’s situation myself, but Andropov and I will bathe in the wicket, thank you very much!

Replacing Collings was Left hander, Nicholson. Reviewing the scorecard I realise that I almost had exclusive use of Nicholson with few other bowlers getting a go at him. Although he had much more use of me than him. Antonov held down Powell quite well on the other side but it took until an unfortunate 49 for Antonov to get a snick and provide Robski with a great double catch at the wicket. A very valuable bat to take.

Deanov delivers

Antonov had 6 overs for 32 runs and a wicket, nice and economic compared to my 8 for 48 and 1. Much improved results from Antonov mark well for next season whereas my plans for round-the-wicket slip catching may go back on hold. KanKan and Chipmonkski were soon bowling. The former once again coming in like a Steam Roller and the Chipmonkski with his punishing demi-loft, lengthy nibble-off-the bails bowl. Though neither Nicholson or Mayo fell, KanKan had 24 off 6 overs and Chipmonkski, 31 from his first 4 over spell.

Jontin now presented his sterling, communist self at the crease and on his second over, suckered the unsuspecting, though already comfortable at 64 Powell into pitching the ball hard and high on the offside towards the pavilion. What followed, comrades, was a cross between a balletic pirouette and side step, an elegant presentation of both arms above the head and a scooping up of the ball in both hands by Vladimir Boringski (aka Charlie). He took a tumble but came up ball in hand. Beautiful.

Mayo retired hurt at 50 leaving Hunt and young S.Kimber to face Deanov and Chipmonkski on a second spell. Hunt achieved 30 and the young blood, 2 – but his first proper runs we are told, so collective hats off to him, comrades! Deanov’s 4 overs cost 28 and Jontin’s 6 for 45 and 1 wicket, don’t forget. Chipmonkski’s second spell of 2 overs for 2.

OUR KNOCK
I find fielding first not to my liking, comrades. I was quite bushed and the thought of settling down to the scorecard and dotting up our batting was a relief. Something that we must improve at in capability. It helps your Maths and makes you a better cricketer, comrades. It would also mean you can avoid umpiring! If you avoid both umpiring and scoring then the polit bureau will be taking a close look at selection time.

Deanov and Vladimir Boringski opened for us. Agar and Denton bowling. Agar had three maidens in 7 overs and cost only 13 runs – so nice and tidy. It did mean that Deanov had to play tight and build up to his normal prowess. Vlad too was keeping it tidy but Denton had other ideas and on his 2nd over got Vlad LBW for 0. This brought Robski in.

Denton again took our comrade Robski and this time a wicket. At this point we were 7 for 3. Oh dear. Familiarity breeds contempt and this situation is utterly contemptuous. What we needed was steady dotting and Captain Cobramovich stepped up and in. There was peace and calming vibes. no more wickets now for forty five minutes and the score could slowly rise. Deanov beginning to scent blood and bone. A blade flashing for collective might. Cobramovich steeling his nerve.

need-new-bat
“Another bat, premier?”

Denton and Agar had their spells and swapped out with Kimber and and Griffiths. Then Kimber jnr. and Collings. Now Deanov was off on a batting mission and we were up to 58. Captain Cobramovich was stumped off Griffiths slinking snake like back to the crease for 5. His return to the steps brought a sunken expression of “I know not to do that” but we were not down hearted. Brandonovski would keep Deanov company, and did so with similar style and grace as our captain. Dotting away like a pro.

Young Sam Kimber took his first grown up wicket (that is to say, a wicket of a grown-up not a fully developed set of stumps) off Deanov just after his 50. Brining in Samovar. Now both Kimber’s were bowling but it was young Kimber again who snaffled Brandonovski by enabling a catch in the field after he had dotted 27 balls, so well done. Poor Andropov very rapidly fell to young Kimber too, caught and bowled.

Disarray in the ranks! Samovar out for 13 to Sam’s father, Antonov in and out in five minutes being bowled Collings. Jontin was now keeping Chipmonksi company and he made a fine communist, if somewhat aristocratically compromised dot of it. Chipmonkski was bowled Denton and so in I popped as tail end Charlie. I padded one ball and then let Jontin face. But we we weren’t there for too much longer as Denton bowled Jontin next over. We were all out for 95. Another SCC batting experience with high points and many, many low points.

Especially fond of my box on the table

High points with the bat are Deanov’s 50 then some stoical “staying in” and slowing the rot by captain Cobramovich and Jontin. But joining these usual suspects were two splendid additions to the “I can stay in the crease” gang, Brandonovski and Chipmonkski. Well done comrades, sometimes for these timed games, staying in is worth a hell of a lot.

A very great day in the delightful Stonor Park and great weather too. Great thanks to all at Stonor for their hospitality and art work in the changing rooms(!).  Well done to young Sam Kimber for playing so well and to our splendid support from young Owen Sewelski stepping in early on to cover some late players. Boooh to the traffic in Henley!

…But a big thanks to all of us comrades for making this final match and the whole season so enjoyable and mutually splendid. A finer bunch of cricketing, communistic styled, soho based, media professionals and dependants you will not meet. Unless you do of course. In which case… ATTACK!

Your very devoted comrade commissar Premier, Yuri.

Match Report: SCC v BOL 27th July 2012

SCC win with 5 balls remaining
105 runs over BOL’s 104

Patchy sun

Olympics 2012… Even if I am not allowed to even think those words outside of copyright, I have! It was the night of the opening ceremony and a night of cricket. The SCC versus Breath Of Life, kind of at home at Regent’s Park, the Hub for a 20-20. The weather was bruising but on the whole it held out. Okay, there was some rain, but not much, comrades!

Yuri [aka Philip Richardson] had his first outing beyond just being the Premier to being Captain too. Frightening and involving a lot of paper gazing and scribbling in the field. He and Sam took the toss and Yuri won, electing to field first. The ground was firm but yielding a little and the light dark and fading – so a brilliant decision, Yuri – 2/10. However, field depth placement was about right throughout the evening even if my positions were poor!

Marie and Nicole

BOL’s Rob and Alex opened the batting and were faced by Chipmonski the bold and imperious [aka Tim Richardson] and Deanov [VCC guest]. The unusual wicket – pacey but not bouncy – was utilised by Chipmonkski with a lovely swerving ball to take BOL’s Rob for 6. He was replaced by BOL’s Oli who also fell to Chipmonkski for 6 – a pattern and happy one too for the field echoed with our signature chirrup “Nib Nib, Nib Nib”

Meanwhile Alex of BOL was putting up a good stand and kept on finding holes in my field. So much so it rather clouded my sense of fair play and I some what densely surrounded new-girl Mary who was fresh to cricket from BOL. Apologies to her, but let’s have a look at the card; although her wicket was expertly taken by a swinging ball from Andropov Sewelski [aka Andrew Sewel] she did face off a dozen balls and I think with some style! Well done, Mary!

We call him Cobramovich

Finn was knobbled for 16 by Deanov’s arm then Sam Kan Kan Captain of BOL and VCC all round fame was next in and he and Alex were together until the latter fell to Chris Curtis – SCC visitor and comrade to be! Sam retired not out after 25 and the latter to batspeople of James and Nicole made 5 and 9 respectively for the last of the 20 overs. This left with the SCC with a target of 104.

The air was squealing with distant shouts… For the Olympic 2012 opening ceremony not us. The sky was darker than dawn and the rain was spitting. So perfect for our innings. Yayyy. Comrades play better in adversity… Good decision, Yuri. Not.

Hatter [aka Dan March… Shall I just write a glossary?] [aka Soldya, yes. I shall write a glossary] opened the batting with Deanov. There was still enough light to make out the glimmer of the approaching bowler and we were off. BOL’s James opened and was followed at the other end by Captain, Sam. Hatter made a Stirling score of 5 before yielding to James but Deanov was away with some solid opening rounds.

James’s next conquest was Andropov. But not for a duck, a rigorous single. Bennettov steps up. He has all of the demeanour of a fine collective adjutant and as such, settled in for a bloody good knock. Despite spells Nicole and Rob, Bennettov got his 25 and was retired to Nib Nib Chipmonkski in. A fine 4 before tempted into LBW off The Cobra, SCC’s Cobramovich.

SCC guest Christ Curtis made a valiant and useful 8 before bowled by James… Familiar pattern. By which time your premier Yuri had scrambled to the crease, this time with his box in the Umpires pocket. Nads too big.

Comrade Jontin joined me at the wicket and we were popping along until I was run out. hat was needed was runs and not my superb test match dotting of the ball. I strolled to the rope with a contented 3.

Now we were down to the last few balls off the last over and a half. Comrade returning Guyev Wilsontin joined Jontin and between them, brilliantly smacked balls about the park from Sam, James and Ollie.

Yuri’s Fly Past

On the first ball of the last over the ball was put into the boundary and Jontin came in with 14 and Guy with 7.

This is the SCC’s first ever victory. It may not have been a two day trial, a one day, slog or a forty over timed match. But it was a 20-20 and it was a victory. Comrades, our motto is now confirmed, Semper Sodales, fors et Victores; Always comrades, maybe occasionally victors!

Thank you, comrades one and all. For details and images of the evil Peppa Pig of losers, please watch this space!

Match Report: PSCC v SCC 19th May 2012

Squirrel pub

Comrades, we thank you and stand saluting the brave that mustered themselves for our opening game of the 2012 season. And what a game it was, with all of the ups and downs and drops and boundaries that make an SCC game worthy of the name. But in particular, the comradely atmosphere won out and helped us feel glorious in the face of defeat.

Penn Street CC play on the main ground opposite the squirrel and it was in that establishment we took lunch and an opening pint. Before us lay the field of battle and captains tossed resulting in PSCC batting first. It was timed game with tea at 16:15 and then 20 overs at 18:30.

Opening bowler of Yuri and brother, Chipmonkski produced a wicket (thank you!) and 55 runs. Not too bad but I feel some missed lbws! The wicket was S.BOYLE, bowling Yuri and a MAGNIFICENT slip catch by Cobramski (Top job, Cobra!)

New bowlers of Cobramski and Buster Marx came in. At this point, our fielding flaws were amply illustrated by many dropped catches. Cobramski serves up a tempting whack and in the right field, we would have taken several wickets with catches from his illusssssssssssive style. As captain Marx said in a post match interview:

“It was a really good game and if we’d taken out catches I think we’d have won, especially if you consider that their main bat was dropped twice early in his innings. I think we should go for timed games for the time being.”

Words of great wisdom comrades! Cobramski’s session ended at six overs for a score that is not required to advertise – if we bolted on the three wickets we could have caught, it would negate all scale! So who to replace? Samavoy – “I can’t bowl today” – KanKan. Well he certainly could bowl despite his injury. In fact, over his bowling he took the wickets of R.Slade and P.Goodchild with  Sutherland out behind – top Wicket keeping, Markx! Soldya Grannma had a short spell and for that, managed a good wicket, stump out, of J.Slade. A happy Soldya went home that night.

Andropov to collect

So in the field, we counted at least twelve dropped catches. We shall work on this comrades. But some good bowling and all was not lost.

Batting brought us out onto the field feeling… special. Not down-hearted as the day was too set fare for that. But perhaps a little daunted at there score of 243 for 7 (score card is wrong). Special mention by the way to C.Fletcher of PSCC who declared at 163.

Cobramski and Brandonov opened the batting. Stay in and solid was the orders (timed game!) and both had heads down. Cobramski took 24 balls and Brandonov, 39. Both produced a total of 7 runs – This is what we call solid defiance, and comrades, Yuri salutes you. This hopefully set in the minds of the opposition that we were here to stay. Cobramski was bowled by Goodchild and no sooner had Antonov Dickster walked out than he walked back. No comment, Tony!

Markx ambled out. The solid defensive wall that is our captain held true. Check this out, comrades: Before being bowled out Lofty, he took 23 runs off 78 balls. We must learn more brick wallness in these situations and watch Markx’s style. Captain, we salute you!

Other batting results: Markx-B (Buster) 23, caught and bowled – a good knock and thank you, comrade! Soldya, caught Fletcher for 12 but by ‘eck – i feel double that before the summer is set in! Chipmonkski, a defiant 1 off 11 balls but great defence of the wicket and partnering. Ilyeva – 2 off 15 balls – utter defiance comrade commissar treasurer!

Yuri loses chin
Yuri loses chin

Andropov Sewelski and Yuri now come together to fend off thirty plus balls for the draw. We tried comrades, and came within less than a dozen to pull it off. Andropov taking 9 off 16 balls and Yuri finally caught by Herriot at 6 runs off 24 balls.

Close comrades! Very close. This season we shall take a draw and who knows….

Semper Sodales, Fors et Victores!

Yuri
